I’M NOT A SHOPKEEPER, I’M A PHARMACIST

Article By Ntoli J Mwaipopo -MUHAS

What does the word “pharmacist” mean?  Few hours after MUHAS issued the names of undergraduate students admitted for the academic year of 2016/2017, I had a call from my uncle, who pictured me being an MD student. “Yes uncle, I have been admitted and I’m going to pursue bachelor of pharmacy (Bpharm)” I said to him. In shocking way, he said “oh, it seems you didn’t perform well, so you were kicked out of MD competition and dusted to pharmacy”.
Most of people think that being a pharmacist is like a shopkeeper waiting for the drug prescribed statement from doctors, they think that pursuing pharmaceutical courses is a second option after not being enrolled to pursue MD. Pharmacist is not just a titled person, is an integral contributor to the overall health care who provide the broad spectrum of services, including conducting health and wellness testing, managing chronic diseases, advising other public health professionals about medicines including proper selection, dosage and drug interaction, potential side effects and therapeutic effects. Pharmacist develops legally recognized standards and advice on government controls and regulations concerning the manufacture and supply of medicines, work in the research and development of medicines and other health-related products. Additionally, in primary health care, Pharmacists educates the societies on health promotion, disease preventions and proper use of medicines. Pharmacy is a diverse and rewarding career, with opportunities for patients care, scientific research and innovation. What a chance being a pharmacist!!
